Egg Harbor was established  July 9, 1861. There are many stories of how the village got its name. The most likely story is that some boats loaded with furs on their way from Green Bay to the trading post at Mackinac Island stopped at this harbor to rest for the night. A competition developed when they rowed to shore and soon hard tack (sea biscuits) and then eggs were being thrown at each other as they raced. The fun continued on shore until there were no more eggs. Thus the name Egg Harbor.
